Is Online Therapy Right for You?
Counselor Sama · 5 min read · September 2026
A few years ago, the idea of sitting with a therapist through a screen felt like a compromise — something you did when you couldn't get to a clinic. That perception has shifted significantly. Online therapy has proven to be an effective option for many mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, relationship difficulties, and stress management — making quality therapeutic support accessible to people who might not otherwise have it.
That said, in-person therapy remains the gold standard for depth of connection and clinical flexibility. Online therapy isn't a replacement — it's a meaningful alternative when circumstances call for it. The real question is whether it's the right fit for your situation, and that depends on a few things worth thinking through honestly.
When Online Therapy Works Well
Online therapy tends to be a strong fit when:
- Distance or location is a barrier. You may live in a city without access to a licensed therapist who speaks your language, or you may be based in Saudi Arabia, the Gulf, or abroad and looking for a therapist who genuinely understands your cultural context. Online sessions remove the geographic constraint entirely.
- Your schedule doesn't accommodate clinic visits. Between work, commuting, and family responsibilities, carving out the time to physically get to a clinic — and back — can quietly become the reason people delay starting therapy. Online sessions fit more naturally into a full life.
- You feel more comfortable in your own space. Some clients find they open up more easily from home. There's no waiting room, no commute afterward where you're still processing — you're already in a place that feels safe.
When In-Person Is the Better Fit
There are situations where in-person therapy is clearly the stronger choice:
- You're dealing with something that benefits from physical presence — certain types of trauma work, for example, or situations where a therapist may need to read body language more closely than a screen allows.
- Your home environment doesn't offer privacy. Therapy requires a space where you can speak openly without worrying about being overheard. If that's difficult to arrange at home, in-person sessions at a clinic give you that protected space.
- You're in active crisis. If you're experiencing severe distress, in-person care provides a level of immediate support and safety that a screen can't replicate.
- You have the option to come in person. When logistics aren't a barrier, in-person sessions offer a richness of connection — the shared physical space, the nonverbal cues, the dedicated environment — that is difficult to fully match through a screen.
This isn't a decision you need to make alone. At Sama Wellness Therapy, your free assessment with Counselor Sama is specifically designed to help determine the right format — in-person or online — based on your individual needs, not a one-size-fits-all recommendation.
What an Online Session Actually Looks Like
If you haven't done online therapy before, here's what to expect:
- Sessions are conducted via secure video call — the same length and clinical structure as in-person sessions.
- You'll work with the same licensed therapists from the Sama Wellness team, matched to your specific needs by Counselor Sama during your assessment.
- All you need is a stable internet connection, a private space, and a device with a camera. No special software or accounts required.
- Sessions are available in both Arabic and English, with therapists who understand the cultural nuances that matter.
Who We Work With Online
Our online sessions are available for clients across Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and the wider Middle East. Many of our online clients are:
- Arabic-speaking professionals in Riyadh, Jeddah, or the Gulf who want therapy in their own language with a therapist who shares their cultural frame of reference
- Egyptians living abroad who prefer a therapist based in Cairo
- Couples where one partner travels frequently or lives in a different city
- Clients already attending in-person sessions at our New Giza clinic who occasionally switch to online when logistics require it
The Assessment Comes First
Whether you end up doing therapy online or in-person, the starting point is the same: a free 15-minute assessment with Counselor Sama. During this conversation, Sama will understand your concern, discuss your preferences, and recommend both the right therapist and the right format for your situation.
You don't need to decide between online and in-person before reaching out. That's part of what the assessment is for.
